The Ravan Within!
Size: 5 X 5 Ft
This painting fuses the grandeur of Raja Ravi Varma’s classical vision with the urgency of contemporary feminist thought.
Against the backdrop of a bustling Delhi marketplace- A stage where cultural traditions and material aspirations collide – unfolds a narrative that is at once mythical and modern.
Sita emerges as a figure of grace and contradiction: adorned with jewels, clutching an Hermès bag, she embodies aspiration, refinement, and agency. Yet her poise is overshadowed by the towering presence of Ravana, whose role here transcends epic villainy. He becomes the embodiment of patriarchy itself – a spectral force that continues to restrain women’s freedom, silence their desires, and dictate the terms of their existence.
The fallen golden wing deepens this drama: once celestial, now fractured, it signifies dreams clipped mid-flight, freedoms curtailed, and the fragile cost of independence. Its glow lingers even in defeat, hinting at resilience waiting to rise again.
Through this interplay of myth, materialism, and metaphor, the work refuses to remain mere storytelling. It compels the viewer to confront the Ravanas around us and within us – the visible and invisible structures that shape women’s lives. It is not only a reimagination of Sita’s struggle, but also a mirror to our own: a timeless battle between tradition and liberation, chaos and grace, suppression and the unbroken will to endure.
